N2 - The demand for safety and security of image data during transmission and storage is increasing over the internet day by day. Images are widely used in several applications such as confidential video conferencing, online personal photographs album, medical imaging system, telecommunication, military image databases etc. Therefore, the security of image data is important. Along with security, for the images which are transferred over the network, the confidentiality and integrity is a major issue. Image encryption techniques should be designed in such a way that along with providing security to the images, it should be able to detect the modifications at the receiving side, if any intruder accesses the image and modifies the data during transmission. In this paper a security scheme has been proposed that encrypts an image using AES algorithm and also focuses on verifying the integrity of the images transferred over the network by using Message Digest5 (MD5) algorithm.
