Abstract
For a cognitive radio, its primary task is to find unutilized portion of the spectrum more precisely for successful implementation of dynamic spectrum sensing. In this paper, first a comparison of two spectrum sensing techniques namely energy detection and covariance absolute value detection method is done for various input data. A new spectrum sensing method named as an alternative selection based detection method which comprises of both energy detection and covariance absolute value detection method to improve the detection probability is described. The simulation results prove that the performance of an alternative selection based detection method is better compared to energy detection and covariance absolute value detection method alone.
