Abstract
The contributions to the reaction cross-section from a shell of radius r and thickness Δ around the scattering centre in an optical-model analysis is calculated for a wide range of systems. It is demonstrated that, unlike in nucleon-nucleus scattering, in nucleus-nucleus scattering the volume absorptive optical potential does not imply that absorption is taking place in the entire nuclear volume; it is confined mostly to the surface region. Our calculations trace the origin of this behaviour to the Coulomb potential.
