Abstract

A bacteriological study was conducted in 164 patients with tubotympanic type of chronic suppurative otitis media, to identify the causative agents and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern. Pus aspirates through an open perforation was used for smear preparation and culture. Total 182 bacterial pathogens were isolated. The major organisms isolated were Pseudomonas aeruginosa- 84, and Staphylococcus aureus - 38. Out of 84 P. aeruginosa, 66 (78.6%) were sensitive to gentamicin, 64(76.2%) to tobramycin and 78(92.9%) to ceftazidime. P.aeruginosa was highly resistant to commonly used antibiotic ciprofloxacin 44(52.4%). S. aureus showed high resistance to penicillin 22(57.9%) and ciprofloxacin 20(52.6%).
