Abstract

Burst mode optical Regenerators (BMORs) have the ability to deal with input powers having large variations. This makes them a suitable candidate to be used in hybrid FSO systems due to the presence of atmospheric turbulence in the channel. With the aid of numerical modelling, the impact of a 2R BMOR cascade on the BER of a hybrid FSO-Fiber system has been investigated and the results have been compared to a continuous mode OR (CMOR) cascade. The effect of amplified spontaneous emission noise has also been incorporated in the model and its interaction with atmospheric turbulence has also been presented.
