Abstract

An extensive study was done to find out the different factors which affected the performance of a sandwich beam with a magnetorheological elastomer embedded to its core. The different types of MR elastomers, modes of application of magnetic field, the different boundary conditions and the various FEM studies based upon MR is presented here. A major part of the literature studied indicated that anisotropic MREs exhibited a larger value of MR effect as compared to isotropic MREs but some studies found that isotropic MREs produced a larger MR effect. The effects of localised and homogeneous magnetic field on MRE embedded beams were studied and compared. Three different boundary conditions were considered which are as follows: simply supported, clamped-clamped and cantilever type.
