Design of Kalman observer for estimation of in-flow

Abstract

This paper presents a technique of inflow measurement using an estimator designed using Kalman observer. The objective of the proposed work is to compute the flow rate before the actuator. Actuators are used as final control element to vary the flow rate based on the set point value. Pneumatic control valve is a most common actuator used in a flow process. The purpose of the valve is to cause an obstruction to the flow based on the set point. Percentage of obstruction is proportional to the flow rate. Estimation of flow rate before the actuation would reduce the burden on controller by avoiding repeated tuning. Kalman observer is used to design the estimator. The designed estimator is validated with simulation and real life data. Results show successful implementation of proposed work.
