Abstract

Essential oils from Ocimum sanctum (Labiatae), Artemesia nilagirica (Asteraceae), Artemesia pellens (Asteraceae), Pelargonium graveolens (Geraneaceae), Cymbopogon winterianus (Graminae), Myristica fragrans (Myristicaceae) and Acorus calamus (Areaceae) were extracted from fresh parts of the plants by hydrodistillation. The antioxidant activity of the essential oils was estimated by two assays namely Diphenyl picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) and Nitric oxide method. Essential oil of O. sanctum showed potent radical scavenging activity in both the methods with IC50 values 32±2.63 μg/ml and 123.6±2.64 μg/ml in DPPH and Nitric oxide methods, respectively. Other essential oils showed moderate activity in both the methods.
