Importance of LEDs placing and uniformity: Phototherapy treatment used for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia

Abstract

Phototherapy devices are most popularly used in medical applications to treat jaundice in infants called Neonatal jaundice. Neonatal jaundice or neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is the symptom of excessive bilirubin in blood in 60% of term babies and almost up to 70% of preterm babies. In earlier studies, it is found that the efficacy of phototherapy devices depends on spectral wavelength, body surface area, irradiance and duration of exposure. And it is important to know even importance of uniformity, peak wavelength and optimum height contribution in reducing phototherapy duration time. The paper explains the importance of uniformity and the optimum height. The uniformities for both the sets of LEDs are determined and selected for further testing. The optimum height at which the LEDs must be mounted is determined by comparing the uniformity values. The temperature is compared with the standard maximum ambient temperature up to which the infant remains healthy.
