Lighting optimization to save energy in an indoor sports facility

Abstract

The tepid growth in electricity consumption in India requires the government to take initiatives to cater to the energy demand while ensuring minimum growth in CO2 emissions. Artificial lighting plays an important role in energy consumption in a building and in a sports facility. For the success of any sports activity, a lighting system is a crucial element in a sports facility. While trying to reduce the energy utilization, lighting quality should never be compromised. This paper presents an evaluation of quality and quantity analysis in a squash court according to different levels of play, in the building of Marena, Manipal University (MIT). The proposed lighting design is in compliance with the World Squash Federation (WSF) to achieve energy efficient lighting. LED lights are chosen for the proposed system since it is highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Lighting design software DIALux evo has been used to design the lighting schemes to achieve the required standards. A comparative analysis of energy evaluation is made and the analysis of data proved that the proposed system with LED luminaires provides an energy saving of 77% compared to the existing system with metal halides.
