Morphometric analysis of the suprameatal region: Clinical signifance

Abstract

The morphology of the suprameatal triangle and Henle's spine is of immense clinical significance to the otologic surgeons for approaching the mastoid antrum and for cochlear implantation procedures. A Study of 411 temporal bones (195 left and 216 right) revealed the presence of Henle's spine in 81.8% of Cases, with the crest type being the highest (66.7%). The different types of suprameatal triangles were deep (38.2%), shallow (42.6%), and slit (12.4%) variety. In 6.8% of the bones, the spine was absent. The occurrence of various types of suprameatal depression and spine along with their clinical significance are discussed.
