Abstract

Technological advancement, economic growth and urbanisation has resulted in an exponential rise of waste materials causing serious threat to health and safety of citizens around the world. It is in this context Integrated Solid Waste Management system, a holistic approach of combination of scientific methods and techniques to convert Waste-to-Energy is gaining importance in designing smart cities as eco-friendly cities. This article provides an overview of Integrated Solid Waste Management system, its benefits on environment and challenges in making smart cities as cleaner, greener and leaner. A perspective of Integrated Solid Waste Management system of select cities across the globe is considered as case studies to incorporate the best practices. A state-of-the-art approach of Integrated Solid Waste Management system is discussed by presenting a model to treat wastes as a renewable source of energy.
